March 2023 - Global Initiative
Every 8th of March we raise awareness against bias, embrace action for equality and celebrate the achievements of all women around the world. We believe that only by ensuring the rights of women and girls we will get to justice and inclusion, economies will work for all, and we will be able to sustain our shared environment now, and for future generations.
At Selenis we champion the advancement of women all year around as we are committed to forging inclusive work cultures where women's careers thrive and their achievements are celebrated. We achieve this by fostering gender diversity in our STEM talent pool and enhancing gender equity.
We also support organisations that operate locally in the communities where we work and engage with them in the areas of domestic and gender violence, as well as education and women empowerment.
During International Women´s Day celebrations, we took the opportunity to recognise the incredible women of our company, whom many have become leaders and role models within our teams. We celebrated women achievements, we learnt about gender rights and violence, and we created community to embrace together equity.
November 2022 – Portalegre, Portugal
Supporting local causes is truly important to Selenis, it’s linked to both our strategy to be locally attuned, as well as to our value of giving back to our communities. We continually allocate our resources with the goal to develop a sustainability strategy that is as regenerative as possible for everything around us, especially the development of young people.
In that sense, Selenis is sponsoring a young handball team in Portalegre, Portugal. Positive experiences that sports bring, play an important role in a young person’s life. Playing sports is linked to better academic results, as determination and goal-setting skills a sport requires can be transferred to the classroom. Fighting for a common goal with a group of players and coaches teaches you how to build teamwork and effectively communicate to solve problems. This experience is helpful when encountering problems at work or at home. Moreover, sports help develop self-confidence, as well as being a natural way of releasing pressure and letting go of stress, a common problem to the young generation.
In addition to our donation, our Sustainability Manager gave a short lecture to young people about sustainability and introduced them to the concept of regeneration – what it means, why it’s necessary, and how we are adopting it into our way of doing things.
November 2022 – Jalisco, Mexico
In 2022 we commenced our environmental education project in local schools in Mexico, focusing especially on teaching the younger generation the importance of recycling and how to do so effectively. Almost one year into the project, we can say that the project has been a success! Not only has it been embraced by the local communities, who value the environmental and social benefits that have come along with our efforts, but the schools have increasingly become interested in partnering with us, as they have seen the positive impact on neighboring schools.
With this action we contribute specifically to target 4.7 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals of ensuring that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, as well as target 4. A of building and upgrading education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.
This project is led by our local partner Sol Pacífico Foundation, who has done a great job in leading this educational and promising program.
October 2022 - Global Initiative
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual and global campaign to raise awareness on breast cancer. At Selenis we raise our voices together to help and spread the word about the importance of breast cancer early prevention by collaborating in each of the countries we operate through fundraising activities and awareness conferences.
We were happy to see how our colleagues embraced our Pink October initiatives across the globe:
Portugal: conference by The Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro
Mexico: conference by Cruz Rosa, an association that provides support to women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families
Brazil: conference by Amigas da Mama, founded by women who have experienced breast cancer
Tunisia: conference by Oasis, Association de Lutte Contre le Cancer
Italy: Selenis acquired pink ribbons brooches as a sign of the importance of awareness and early detection from AIRC, a Cancer Research Foundation
Additionally, Selenis bought t-shirts across all our locations in Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and the USA, from different partners where the contribution will go towards cancer research.
We joined hands, and hearts, to support research, show solidarity with all women who deal with breast cancer. Breast cancer treatment can be highly effective, especially when the disease is identified early.
Awareness and research can make the difference. Together we can make it happen!
Ongoing activity – Global Initiative
Birth rates are declining globally, and the economic consequences are severe. In the 1960s, there were six people of working age for every retired person. Today, the ratio is three-to-one, and by 2035, it will be two-to-one. On the other hand, families are experiencing hard times in the current economic context, with rising schooling and food prices.
In light of this, Selenis stands by the employees who are welcoming new-borns1 into their families by giving a baby check to all employees who are growing their families2.
We hope that this contribution will be of great help to our families. Together we can make it happen!
1 Our policy also applies to adopted children
2 Effective for all babies born as of January 1st 2022. In some of our locations this policy already existed, but the value of the check has increased, following our new natality booster policy.
Ongoing activity – Monterrey, Mexico
Selenis has associated with ALPAZ in the fight again domestic violence, a global problem that has serious health consequences for the victims. It can lead to negative health outcomes and behavioral health concerns, such as depression. Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to some form of violence in their lifetime, and it’s not only a problem that affects women, but also men, children, and the elderly.
Unfortunately, the problem of domestic violence happens in all countries. In Mexico, there were more than 3,400 femicides in 2021. It’s a serious problem that affects thousands of women and their families every year. In January 2022, we started to collaborate with an association in Monterrey, Mexico, known Asociación Alternativas Pacífica (ALPAZ).
ALPAZ is a Mexican association that cares for women and children who have suffered domestic violence and provides a perspective of personal development, in a protected environment that goes beyond typical care frameworks. Their activities contribute to the personal growth of these women, helping them regain autonomy and independence through, for example, self-employment workshops. ALPAZ assumes the legal representation of women to help them take a new, happier, completer and more autonomous path. Additionally, their children also have the chance to attend the shelter school.
So far in 2022, ALPAZ has assisted 15,635 women and 1,469 children. Our Group contributes to this assistance by funding a professional who provides psychological counselling to these people, as well as a legal advisor. We are aware this kind of assistance is enormously important for the empowerment of women who suffer domestic violence. For this reason, we have decided to continue with our contribution beyond 2022 to further increase our regenerative impact.

At Selenis we are aware of the dangers associated to this problem and the importance of solving it. As part of our regenerative strategy, we have partnered with organizations, fighting this issue, in each of the countries where our company has operations.
In Portalegre, Portugal, we partnered with the Núcleo de Atendimento às Vítimas de Violência Doméstica Portalegre (NAVVD), a service of the Portuguese Red Cross of Portalegre, which provides personalised, confidential, and free care to victims of domestic violence, such as legal, psychological, sheltering, and financial.
So far in 2022, this organisation has assisted 58 women, 26 children and 4 men. Selenis contributes to this assistance by funding a professional who provides psychological counselling to these people. We are aware that psychological care is enormously important for the empowerment of people who suffer domestic violence.
For this reason, we have decided to continue with our contribution beyond 2022 and enlarging the scope of our activities with the organization, to further increase our regenerative impact.
September 2022 – Portalegre, Portugal
Selenis recently sponsored an off-road car racing, known as the Baja Portalegre 500, that took place in the local community of our industrial site in Portugal. Portalegre has become Portugal’s national off-road capital, hosting the 35th edition of the race that has unanimously been recognized as one of the best in Europe.
The race is part of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, as well as the FIM Bajas World Cup. It was held in the Automobile, Moto, Quad and SSV categories, and its quality and competitiveness are confirmed by the yearly presence of the most important international riders.
As part of our regenerative strategy, we want to assure that our company is locally attuned to our bioregion and the local ecosystem.
July 2022 – Portalegre, Portugal
We care for the personal and social development of the communities where we operate. To fulfil this commitment, one of the initiatives we are undertaking this year is a collaboration with a school in one of the local communities where we are present, Escola José Régio in Portalegre. Through this partnership we support the school in offering proper educational conditions to all students, and an environment where kids can develop and grow as responsible citizens.
Our collaboration with this school started in 2021 when we sponsored a book filled with a collection of regionalisms from the North Alentejo, “Património Linguístico do Norte Alentejo”, that was created through the teamwork of students and teachers from the José Régio school.
Our goal is to continue encouraging such initiatives by regularly providing this school with means to offer education and to continue with local initiatives that show the cultural heritage of our communities. We have developed a financial collaboration program for 2022 that will be very fruitful for students and their community in general.
Selenis believes in regeneration and development, both educational and cultural. This is the best way to support Sustainable Development Goal #4, helping boys and girls to complete quality primary and secondary education, as well as promoting the appreciation of cultural heritage and its contribution to sustainable development.
July, 2022 – Portalegre, Portugal
Selenis sponsors second edition of “Património Linguístico”, a book filled with a collection of regionalisms from the North Alentejo, a geographical area of Portugal where our biggest plant is located. As part of our regenerative strategy, we want to ensure that our whole team understands and feels the connection between our activities, their work and the interaction between their bioregion and the local ecosystem.
The book “Património Linguístico do Norte Alentejo” was created through the collaboration of students and teachers from the José Régio- Portalegre Basic School. With this initiative, the school intended not only to present the registered vocabulary to students, their families, and teachers, but also to spread, both in the educational community and in society in general, a sense of appreciation in our regional speeches.
June 2022 - Jalisco, Mexico
In celebration of World Oceans Day, Selenis partnered with the Sol Pacífico Foundation and organized a beach clean-up with students from the Arroyo Seco School (Jalisco, Mexico). It was the perfect opportunity to encourage stewardship and volunteerism along our coastlines, and get the younger generation involved in cleaning-up marine debris.
The children picked up the garbage, then separated it into 5 corresponding containers: plastic, glass, cardboard, aluminum, and non-recyclable inorganic waste. Afterwards, they enjoyed sponsored surf lessons as part of the experience, making this occasion a positive and memorable community event.
This was an opportunity for the students to not only learn about the importance of recycling and how to do so properly, but also have fun while valuing the importance of taking care of our mother earth.
March 2022 – Global Initiative
Every March 8th Selenis celebrates the International Women’s Day. This year we organised a lunch event for our female co-workers across all Selenis production and business sites, joining our teams in Portugal, Spain and Italy in a festive moment.
To Selenis, ensuring gender equality and the empowerment of women across the world, regardless of their personal circumstances, is a priority we take seriously.
The role of our company as a transformative agent in reducing inequalities is essential to achieve the targets of SDG 5- Gender Equality. And, even if we strive for gender equality in our group, we must fight the gender bias that keeps women from being present in all the aspects of life. Biases go from a typically industrial male dominated sector such as ours, to social prejudices that sideline women and girls in certain tasks and jobs. The bias is even bigger if we consider other diversity factors, such as ethnic or cultural background.
At Selenis, we contribute to fighting prejudices and get rid of stereotypes and discrimination. We work for a world where girls and women can play the role they deserve in all aspects of life and work, including fields such as science, technology and engineering.
This is a toast to women and girls, for peace and equality and against the gender bias!
February 2022 – Portugal
At Selenis we believe in nature-based solutions to solve climate change. In a win-win initiative, we planted 4,000 trees in Portugal, bringing benefits to farmers and the local community. Farms become more efficient, more climate friendly, as trees absorb CO2, release oxygen and return carbon to the soil, as well as store water.
January 2022 – Jalisco, Mexico
Environmental education of our youth is the cornerstone for a balanced future where people and planet can flourish together. At Selenis we support the communities of the countries where we operate by acting on those who are the future: children and youth. That’s why we have decided to support 6 primary schools in the State of Jalisco, Mexico, in three main areas:
- Environmental education to raise awareness among kids and their families about the importance of waste collection and recycling
- Workshops in collaboration with the community in topics such as permaculture, bio-construction or waste pick-up at beaches
- Reconstruction of schools, and improvement of their infrastructure, as well as computer equipment
These schools will be financially supported in 2022 and monitored by our sister Foundation, the Sol Pacífico Foundation. We hope for the scalability of the project, so that more communities can be positively affected in the future.
It's through collaboration with people, schools and communities that we can make things happen!
January 2022 – Jalisco, Mexico
Selenis started 2022 with the renewal of our commitment to the Careyes Foundation's Vocational Training Center (VTC) – a place dedicated to the professional training and the improvement of people’s skills in different areas, as well as promoting their employability. The goal of the VTC, is to expand professional opportunities for adolescents and adults who face barriers to continue formal education. By offering an accessible means to study a technical career and prepare for working life, with individualised support along the way, it also introduces a path for economic advancement that is entirely new to the local communities.
The programme is led by the Careyes Foundation, and operates from a classroom in the Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture) in the village of Emiliano Zapata, La Huerta, Jalisco. The classroom is equipped with computers, high-speed internet, and a covid-safe space for collaborative work.
Through our partnership with the Sol Pacífico Foundation in 2019 Selenis made an initial donation of 10,000 USD for the start-up of the center, which due to the Covid Pandemic, only started activities in 2021. Through a second donation of 10,000 USD, we hope to increase the social value generated, which in 2021 reached 85 attendees in different courses:
- Training for people’s employability
- English
- IT
In 2022 new courses are planned, such as carpentry and entrepreneurship, as well as continuing and deepening with existing training programmes. There are also plans to create a job bank to help channel the employment needs of companies in the area.
In the medium and long term, there are plans to teach robotics, as well as hospitality courses, which will result in great benefits for the community.
With our continued commitment to this project of the Careyes Foundation, we support the development of the young adults of the community, both from a personal and professional point of view, whilst we apply our value of regeneration, which implies the growth of the communities in which we operate.
October 2021 - Global Initiative
October is the month when Selenis wears pink, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Together, we’re raising awareness and showing our support to everyone that has been touched by this disease.
Selenis contributed to this movement by purchasing t-shirts, for all the women in the group, through organizations related either to Breast Cancer Research, or to help women in difficult conditions get through these tough times, with shelter, food, psychological support, lymphedema therapies, and others.
We would like to thank everyone that helped getting us closer to the cure!
September, 2021 – Likoni, Kenya
Access to education is something that all children should have the opportunity to have, no matter their circumstances. Selenis has committed to improving the lives of the children in an orphanage in Likoni, Kenya, through the donation of a tuk tuk that takes them to school and also serves as a channel for monthly income.
Apart from assuring an easy and safe means of transportation, the tuk tuk was donated to the orphanage also as a way to create a steady income to pay for their monthly costs. The orphanage reached an agreement with an experienced driver, whereby they take the children to and from school, and in between, the vehicle is rented to them for their business of tuk tuk taxi services.
The orphanage was having a difficult time making ends meet and this has been part of the solution to auto-finance their costs, and most importantly, the children have secured transportation to school.
Selenis came across this particular case through a personal connection to the management of the orphanage, but to our Group, this donation is part of a bigger mission. The value of “Goodness – Do right by people and society”, is at the heart of our organisation.
August, 2021 – Portalegre, Portugal
As part of our regenerative strategy to be locally attuned, Selenis Portugal sponsored the AE Best Summer Camp project in Portalegre.
The camp provided the children from the Bonfim Schools Group the chance to develop socio-emotional skills associated with knowledge in various areas, such as Arts, Nature, Sports and Entrepreneurship. Thus, enabling these students to have access to more formative, enriching and diversified experiences, which we trust contributed to increasing their self-esteem and school progression.
The AE Best Summer Camp is a great way to entertain children during the Summer, whilst they were off school, and allowed them to interact with children outside their school life, developing their social skills.
August, 2021 – Jalisco, Mexico
The IMG Group is proud to announce the construction of a new Eco-Brick bus stop, built in the community of Arroyo Seco, in the municipality of La Huerta, Jalisco. The collaboration of the residents was an essential part of the initiative, as it is based on the collection of PET bottles filed with plastic waste, by the community members.
The accomplishment of this project is very relevant to the everyday life of the local community, considering that previously there was no structure where they could wait comfortably for public transport, sheltered from the sun or rain.
Results:
- 327 habitants benefited with supermarket vouchers in exchange for Eco-Bricks;
- Built with 309 Eco Bricks and 4 sheets of tetra pack;
- Approx. 927 bags jumbo of reused garbage;
- 3 people hired for the week of the construction.
June 2021 – Mexico
Selenis planted 1,000 trees in Costa Alegre, an area highly affected by hurricanes, having suffered 3 in the last 10 years. This initiative is in place in an effort to replace trees downed by the hurricanes, one of them being the strongest storm ever recorded, reaching a wind speed of 345 km/h.
June, 2021 – Portalegre, Portugal
Selenis Portugal invited all our employee’s children, between the ages of 3 and 6, to celebrate the Children’s Day in Portugal surrounded by Nature.
We’ve partnered with the Pedagogic Project Bosque Escola Avelãs to organize several outdoor activities centered around the children’s’ interaction with the environment.
The event took place at a beautiful local farm known as Quinta das Avelãs, in Portagem, Marvão.
April, 2021 – Global Initiative
Selenis is proud to announce the launch of the IMG FOR ALL program. An Employee Assistance Program designed by our mother company, IMG Group, that supports our employees not only during these challenging pandemic times, but also after the health crisis is over, in coping with personal and professional difficulties that may adversely affect their health and well-being.
This program provides our people with a set of services designed to help in day-to-day issues related to personal and family matters, through counseling by phone, online, or in person, available 365 days a year 24/7. Every employee has access to professionals specialized in legal, psychological, and financial advisory services to themselves and their direct household members. All services are free of charge for our employees and are completely confidential.
With this program we want to contribute directly to target 8.8 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which is to promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, as well as to ensure that essential health, social protection and basic services are available for our employees.
At Selenis, we are committed to the well-being of our talented and dedicated team! We want to give back to those who give us the most.
April, 2021 – Curitiba, Brasil
Selenis is proud to announce that we have partnered with “Instituto de Embalagem” (a Packaging Institute in Brazil) to deliver a beautiful project that introduces children to the universe of packaging and its relationship with nature. Part of our mission is to deliver a better future for future generations by helping the youngest learn quality information at the greatest rate possible.
Last year, Selenis sponsored the production of a book that focuses on the education of the environmental advantages of recycling. Unfortunately Covid-19 appeared, and it’s only now, with the gradual reopening of schools in Brazil, that we have the opportunity to work directly with the children. Our goal is to explain the importance of packaging and the proper destination after its use so as to reduce waste and create a circular economy.
Selenis is happy to have associated with several schools, namely, Escola Superativa, through whom we’ve had amazing results, as seen is these pictures.
At Selenis, we invest in educational tools that effectively contribute to the health of the world and the people.
Better packaging means a better world.
January 2021 - Jalisco, Mexico
As part of our project with our partner, Sol Pacífico Foundation, 900 eco-bricks have been used to build two bus stops in the villages of San Mateo and Emiliano, and another two will be built in the coming weeks, using an additional 600 eco-bricks.
Through this initiative we sensitize communities on the importance of recycling. We also help families economically with the incentive of our voucher scheme where each “eco-brick” delivered to the foundation can be cashed as vouchers to be used in local supermarkets. More than 128 families participated in the last collection.
This project also has other environmental benefits – for the construction of these four bus stops in particular, 9000 m2 of waste was reused instead of going to landfills.
Despite the fact that there is still some way to go, our ultimate goal is to improve the health and well-being of every community we touch.
Ongoing activity - Jalisco, Mexico
Our parent company, IMG Group, partnered with the Sol Pacífico Foundation to collaborate in several initiatives linked to education, as well as plastic recycling and upcycling. As part of our project with the Foundation, we launched the Eco-Brick project. Eco-bricks are made using PET bottles filled with non-recyclable materials. These then become the building blocks of an ecological building structure with the following benefits:
Reduction in environmental pollution and emissions as waste is reused
Material for insulation purposes
High durability
Easy to store and transport
Simple and low-cost technique
We embarked on this project with local schools as we believe that the younger generations are the future for a greener planet. Through class-room presentations, we highlighted the positive impact that this ecological construction delivers and taught the students how to make their own eco-bricks. With this knowledge, a fun and educational activity was created whereby students participated in the construction of benches and other elements for the improvement of their school facilities.
As an additional incentive eco-bricks can be cashed as vouchers to be used in local supermarkets (5 eco bricks = 20 USD)

March & April 2020 – Portalegre, Portugal
Due to the unprecedent sanitary crisis caused by the Covid-19 virus, the IMG Group has donated 575 meals so far to all truck drivers who transport products from Evertis and Selenis industrial sites in Portugal. This initiative was born after hearing from truck drivers about the difficulties they were facing in buying food at petrol stations due to long lines now that all dine-in restaurants have been closed. Thus, the Group decided to provide a complete and healthy take-away meal to make their trips a little easier amidst the current crisis. Truck drivers are risking their own health and are working non-stop to keep supplying the essential businesses in the medical & healthcare, cleaning products, and food industries. Out of respect for their crucial role at this and at all times, for helping to keep these and other companies up and running and also through the strong sense of solidarity of the IMG Group, we will continue to provide these meals as long as this is necessary.
March & April 2020 - Global Initiative

March 2020 - Mexico
The IMG Group rejects any kind of manifestation of violence. That is why our sister-company Evertis joined #ADayWithoutWomen movement that was called for on March 9th, 2020. We appreciate how important women are in our day to day lives and consider them essential members of our organization. At the IMG Group we reassured female employees that they mattered and with the support of our management, they wouldn’t have their time off or remuneration negatively impacted. We also suggested employees who came to work that day, wore a purple garment as a symbol of support for this cause.
December 2019 – Portalegre, Portugal

September 2019 - Portalegre, Portugal
The IMG Group donated funds to replace the extension ladder of the Portalegre’s fire truck used when fires breakout in multistory buildings. The extension ladder of the Portalegre Firefighters had been inoperative for many months after being damaged in a fire intervention and, due to the lack of funds, this vital equipment couldn’t be repaired. The IMG Group became aware of the situation and took on the cost of a new replacement, making the fire truck fully functional and ready for service to the community.
