First of all, I would like to say that one of our most important goals, apart from being a sound and economically sustainable company, is to deliver solutions that contribute to circularity and the regeneration of the ecosystems. Being a company that relies on finite resources, we need to adapt our products and processes to the maximum rate of recycled content and recyclability. A dependence on virgin material is no longer an option. We are deeply devoted to a circular economy and to the Sustainable Development Goals as defined by the United Nations in 2015.
2020 has been a difficult year for all of us, people and society have suffered a strong and difficult situation from the economic and social point view. Luckily, we have all stuck together, and tried our best to support those most in need. The health crisis has made us aware of the responsibility we have on our planet and on the balance of ecosystems. Environmental disequilibrium makes us vulnerable to pandemics. Anything we do to restore balance in nature is also something we do to prevent future diseases. We are also more conscious about the value we create for society and our employees. Many people have had to endure financial and personal hardships and we wanted them to know that our company is there to help them.We should not forget how important plastic products were during the pandemic, especially in the first phases, when personal protection equipment was scarce and people had to 3D print them. Plastic-made products saved countless lives! Also, at times when everyone was trying to make the least trips possible to supermarkets, people realised the value of food protection in packaging that extends shelf life and guarantees product safety.
We are working hard to increase recycled content in our products as well as their recyclability through innovative solutions. Our company is also a member of associations promoting recycling worldwide, and this is certainly one of our goals for the future: Increase awareness on the importance of a circular economy. Selenis also has started our transition towards being a regenerative company, as we have realised that the “do less harm” posture is not enough. By this we mean acknowledging our place in greater systems, beyond the market, and taking action in the of restoration of ecosystems and the life improvement of the communities we reach. In other words, we seek to increase our socio-ecological handprint by restoring the health of the planet, individuals and communities. To do so, we will deploy employee programs to support them in important aspects of their everyday lives, and we will develop community programs to back environmental, educational, and social causes.
We have started to explore principals to apply to our processes and packaging, that stem from biomimicry. We are exploring the R&D of Nature and looking to apply it to our resins, not only the final product but in the industrial process too. Understanding better how Nature behaves is one of our major objectives and mimicking its adaptation techniques is something our whole industry could learn from.
We believe in a context where companies can no longer be isolated but must be as connected to the people and the planet as much as possible. A world where we collaborate with our stakeholders to develop solutions that are positive for the company and for the planet - one thing does not exclude the other. I am sure that the future of our company, and of all those who want to last, is to adopt regenerative strategies and always be the best “for” the world, and not just the best “in” the world.
I would like to express my gratitude to all the employees of our company, no matter where they work from. They have all contributed to the achievement of our economic, social and environmental goals in such difficult times. We have ambitious goals for the future, but together we can make them true. Let’s make it happen!
